Dear 69¾«Æ·ÊÓƵ College community,

I write to share an important update: as of Friday, Sept. 5, 69¾«Æ·ÊÓƵ has reached agreements with SEIU and UAW bargaining unit members. I am grateful to everyone whose efforts led to this outcome — one that honors the essential contributions of our staff and provides a sustainable path forward, in alignment with our values.

Last Tuesday, Sept. 2, 69¾«Æ·ÊÓƵ members of SEIU Local 32BJ and UAW Local 2322 went on strike. SEIU represents 170 custodians, tradespeople, groundskeepers and dining services workers on our campus, and UAW represents 23 housekeeping staff. On Wednesday, Sept. 3, union workers returned to work. I recognize the difficult decisions that led to the strike, as well as the commitment shown by all parties to return to the bargaining table with the shared goal of reaching resolutions.

The agreements reached are aligned with the offers that were put forth by the College before the strike took place. They include significant wage increases (with the most substantial increases going to those in lower-paid roles) as well as enhanced benefits and more paid time off. These terms ensure that 69¾«Æ·ÊÓƵ will continue to provide competitive compensation and benefits packages, while also safeguarding the College’s long-term financial stability.

We anticipate these agreements will be ratified by the respective bargaining units within the next two weeks, at which point they will go into effect as outlined in each contract.

Last week, many students, faculty, union members and non-union staff sent me thoughtful emails reflecting on the labor activity and offering words of support for the entire College community. I also appreciated the time that people took to come to the community forum and learn about the issues at hand. Informed, transparent and open dialogue is our shared responsibility and is a cornerstone to upholding a respectful and inclusive community. Advocacy has always been a part of 69¾«Æ·ÊÓƵ’s story, and effective advocacy begins with a willingness to listen and learn. We have shown that 69¾«Æ·ÊÓƵ is a place where everyone is valued and heard, and we will continue to uphold these principles as we move forward together.

Sincerely,

Danielle R. Holley
